The art studio


The art studio was opened in 1990. The head and the founder of the studio is architect Luybov Nordshtein.

The art studio cooperated with such architects as:

Unitary enterprise «Art studio of architect Nordshtein L. A.» develops different projects. One of the first ones was restoration of the wooden church «The Intercession of the Virgin» in the settlement Khotlyany in Uzda region, a monument of architecture of the 19th century.

A major work which was going on in the art studio almost all years was in the settlement Mezhdurech’e of the Open Joint Stock Company «Naftan»: it is the general plan with organization of public services and engineering networks, water accomplishment^; basic buildings of the public center: the teaching and educational center (pilot project), the individual project of the social center, a hotel for the soccer team «Naftan», cottages and interior design for these buildings.

The art studio devoted much time to planning and organization of public services and sport and fitness constructions. These were: accomplishment of the «Keramin» factory^; campus for the Belorussian State University in Oktyabrskaya Street (with stadium), a stadium in Semashko Street, a stadium for field hockey in Smolevichi, tennis courts, a soccer playing field in the settlement Mezhdurech’e^; baths and sports and fitness complex in the region of Braslav lakes, in the Belarussian president’s residence «Drozdy», «Lake», in «Kranoselsk»^; planning and equipping with public services and engineering networks of cottages and accomplishment of Naroch resort settlement.

The art shop is also engaged in the work for commercial buildings of different purposes, restaurants and café. We also worked on projects of underground garages, equipping them with services and engineering networks on the roof^; the Amateur and Folk Art Museum in Stolbtsy and a lot of other various projects...

The architect, who develops the project of a building, complex of buildings or the whole city, strives for giving to his creation individual, unique look.
But buildings do not exist and are not perceived separately from the surrounding landscape.


It has to be transformed, and sometimes to be created anew so that the buildings could blend well with the surrounding land, and the environment would emphasize and supplement their architecture.


During years of work the art studio received a number of diplomas in the republican shows of the Architects Union of Belarus:
- for interiors of "the Blue drawing room "of the social center in the settlement Mezhdurech’e,
- for a house for a captain in Gantsevichi,
- for a summer cottage of architect Nordshtejn L. A.,
- for the teaching and educational center in Mezhdurech’e and some other rewards.

One of our serious projects is an integrated architectural and landscape solution for the settlement Mezhdurech’e of the Open Joint Stock Company «Naftan» not far from Novopolotsk, developed by our art studio.

A lot of preliminary work has been done for studying the existing relief, vegetation, water resources, the roads built and economic communications. It helped to work out a high-grade ensemble of dwelling and public buildings development and its water and vegetative framing.
This experience shows that though the landscape architecture still remains in the position of poor Cinderella, in the future its role will increase.

People cannot have careless attitude to their environment any more. The landscape architecture is called for help to make this environment more convenient, functional, aesthetic and ecological.

Now the problem of dwelling place culture is given a great importance. Culture of dwelling is a very capacious concept.

It includes convenient, functional and economically planned solution of an apartment that would meet needs of the people living in it. It includes high-grade development of facades and interiors, from the architectural point of view, and the reliable engineering maintenance of the facility and also convenient and beautiful sanitary-engineering equipment.

Such aspects, as favorable ecological conditions in the area of residing, presence of convenient transport communications and facilities of cultural and consumer services and trade are indissolubly connected with dwelling place culture.

And, certainly, not the last role here plays the opportunity of purchasing qualitative (both from functional, and aesthetic point of view) decoration materials, furniture, items of arts and crafts and lots of other things due to which cozy, «spiritualized» environment for human life is created.

A definite attention in the developments is given also to the introduction of elements of «bioclimatic architecture», allowing due to a certain orientation of a building, its space-planning decision, special constructive and engineering decisions to provide savings of power resources at the stage of construction and operation, to improve a microclimate of the dwelling place and its ecological characteristics.

The Blue drawing room

The drawing room was designed by Nordshtein L. A. as an element of a high aesthetics introduced into ordinary consciousness that will lead it onto another cultural level. She designed it as a highlight, which transforms well arranged, but ordinary rural settlement into a small cultural center, a place where people of the settlement have an opportunity to touch the world culture, and to be caught up in it.

A person is formed by environment, and an architect creates the environment for 50-100 years ahead. The major element of this environment should become a place where one can see art with his own eyes, not on TV or reproductions, but the original, professional, «natural» art. Its influence on the younger generation is extremely important. Contacting the real art opens for a person an opportunity to get rid of selfish attitude to life and its blessings. And the further these places are from capitals and cultural centers, the more precious such opportunity is.

Certainly, people want to live in grand style, they want to listen to popular fancy music, to watch fascinating or amusing programs on TV, to read, to sing to a guitar.

In all this there are elements of art and culture, but basically it is pop culture. But pop culture and authentic art are not the same things, and though they are interrelated, they differ. Pop culture is omnipresent and importunate^; it is easily duplicated and easily perceived. Art is restrained^; it needs comprehension of intellectual efforts and direct contact with the work of art. For their comparison and leveling the odds it is necessary to find such a place, or a corner, or an island where art can be seen with your own eyes.

Such projects should be implemented only on a very high professional level, otherwise everything becomes meaningless. To work at the development and realization of the project L. A. Nordshtein invited real masters, not artisans^; in old times they were called masters of art — in painting, sculpture, decorative and an applied art, design.

It required enormous energy, contacts and credibility of the author. And thus, she managed to unite in one harmonious whole work absolutely different and bright individualities. So the result was an integral «team of art masters».

Having such participation it was not surprising, that the interior of «The blue drawing room» received the diploma of the Union of architects of Belarus «for revival of arts and crafts traditions».

Here there was no blind adherence to traditional images^; what was revived — was the serious professional attitude to work and refusal to copy Western fashionable samples in favour of national style. Belarusian national style? And what is national style? Quite often it is understood only as folklore. Certainly, the folklore needs to be kept, collected, and taken care of. But still it is the style of the past, and for the future one needs to search for something new, unlike somebody else’s, and it should be not worse on the artistic level.

The Blue Drawing Room of L. A. Nordshtein and her team-mates is a pattern of such approach, it is a step in the right direction. And God grant, that it is not the last one. It should be mentioned that the team of art masters was gathered together not by chance. All of them constantly cooperate under the aegis of the art studio. Their design, decorative and applied works, plastic of small forms, paintings of the group «Artel», residential and public buildings, souvenirs and a lot of other things are developed, implemented and exhibited in the art studio. The head of the art studio is L. A. Nordshtejn. Orders are accepted.

    If the art of the period of modernism formation was characterized by rejecting the culture of the past and by independence of an individual from any kind of relationships, then a new turn waiting for us, makes us look for the lost things - love and respect one person for another, and for the world as a whole.
